Nestled in the bustling East Village of Downtown Manhattan, Stars Bar stands as a testament to refined design and collaborative vision. This intimate wine bar, conceived by the local firm Studio Valle de Valle in partnership with seasoned New York restaurateurs, occupies a modest 450-square-foot space within an early 20th-century tenement building. Its understated facade, featuring original tiles and a distinctive metal doorway with semi-transparent glass, hints at the sophisticated interior awaiting discovery.
The interior of Stars Bar is a "jewel box" of carefully selected materials and thoughtful illumination. Studio Valle de Valle embraced the challenge of the compact footprint, utilizing design elements to expand the perceived volume of the space. A fabric-draped faux skylight bathes the bar in a soft glow and imparts a sense of height, while cedar-clad walls and a central zinc-topped bar create a rich textural contrast. Custom mahogany stools, also designed by the studio, complement the bar's aesthetic, inviting patrons to linger. A waist-level ledge along the back wall provides additional standing room, ensuring the small venue remains welcoming even during peak hours. The choice of matte red marble for the flooring adds another layer of depth and visual interest to the overall composition. Co-founder Chase Sinzer emphasizes the importance of material interplay, noting how the buttery zinc, subtle red marble, and the unique stools harmoniously converge.
Beyond its striking design, Stars Bar is a cultural and sensory experience. The back-of-house elements are subtly integrated into the design, visible through a cased opening with a reflective ceiling that further enhances the spatial illusion. Shelves displaying glassware are elegantly set against zinc-clad walls. Music fills the air from a bespoke mahogany stereo speaker, custom-designed by Tom Bloxam to match the bar's stools, while two original artworks by American artist Frank Stella add an artistic flourish. As a fresh addition to New York's thriving culinary scene, Stars Bar offers a curated selection of wines by wine director Julia Schwartz, alongside a menu of small bites, providing a refined destination for enthusiasts seeking a memorable experience. It serves as an example of how thoughtful design can elevate even the smallest spaces into significant urban landmarks, enriching the city's vibrant tapestry.
Stars Bar epitomizes how creativity and attention to detail can transform spatial constraints into unique opportunities for exceptional design. This project reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and an understanding of how environment shapes experience, inviting guests into a sanctuary of elegance and warmth.
